James Gergurich

Principal, Tax

James Gergurich is a Tax Principal in the San Diego office of KPMG. His practice focuses on tax issues and transactions associated with the asset management and real estate industries. He has extensive experience advising public and private REITs from formation to liquidation. James also serves real estate funds and their sponsors regarding a broad range of domestic and international tax matters, including new fund structuring and formation, tax efficient operation, and strategic sales and acquisitions, including initial public offerings. In addition to these areas, James provides strategic counsel on issues related to partnership taxation, to advise operating businesses and other enterprises on the use of the partnership form. 

James’ diverse experience enables him to evaluate and attack challenges from different perspectives, seeking the right solution to a problem. This skill has enabled him not only to use simple, efficient solutions where appropriate but also to work to with clients to develop innovative approaches. Importantly, though, he consistently works with clients to help them identify and avoid potential challenges before they occur. 

For a number of years, he was an adjunct professor in the USC Leventhal School of Accounting, Masters in Business Taxation program, where he served as an instructor on taxation of passthrough entities. He continues to be actively involved in a number of community efforts in San Diego.
